January 2 is National Personal Trainer Day and we're doing this special Profiles interview with Leah Recania! She's a girl boss we've gotten to know and you may have remembered her from our Banana Party last summer. Not only is she a personal trainer, she is the founder of Strong Babes, a community of like-minded women (and men too!) who work out together and empower each other. We get to know a little bit more about her and she also shows us a few simple work outs that we can do. So who's ready to get 2020 off to the right start?!
CE: Hi, Leah! Happy Personal Trainer Day! We’ve worked with each other a lot last year. For those who don’t already know you, can you tell us a little something about yourself?
Leah: Hi there! I’m thankful for all the fun collabs we were able to make happen last year. For those that don’t know me, I am a Bay Area Native who recently moved to LA. My passion is helping women find their strength from the inside out. I do this through hosting community events called Strong BABEs and I offer personal training services.When I’m not working or working out in the gym, I love to read at home or go on hikes around LA.
CE: How long have you been a personal trainer? Was it always something that you wanted to do?
Leah: I’ve been a personal trainer for 6 years now since 2014. It was always my dream job since I was in high school (2008), but I didn’t have the courage or the knowledge on how to pursue my dream until after I graduated.
CE: What are your thoughts on popular diet trends like keto, paleo, Whole30? Do you follow a specific diet?
Leah: I don’t believe in trend diets, but I am open to the Whole 30 as a cleanse/diet reset. What I aim to teach my girls who work with me is how to create a lifestyle out of fitness. The problem with trend diets is that they’re not sustainable long term. Whole30 is meant to help you eat more whole, unprocessed foods which is ultimately what we should all be doing.

CE: What are some tips on getting into shape for the New Year?
Leah: My top three tips are as followed: First, set a realistic short-term goal and celebrate the small win. Second, keep setting short realistic goals to help you stay motivated all year. Third, don’t do it alone. As with anything in life, you are more likely to succeed when you have people holding you accountable and supporting you. Find friends to workout with, tell them your goals, and if you want to work with a trainer or coach, make sure you find the right one for you.
CE: You’ve recently moved to Los Angeles from the Bay Area. How are you liking it so far?
Leah: Omgosh, I love it so much. I grew up in the Bay Area my entire life and even went to college in the East Bay at Saint Mary’s College of California. Other than an extended 3 month trip post graduation to Oahu, I’ve never really lived anywhere else. Living in Los Angeles is fun, and humbling plus the weather is great!
CE: What’s your favorite CompletEats cookie flavor?
Leah: I am equally a coffee and chocolate lover so I can never get enough of the Mocha Chip!
CE: Can you recommend a few work outs that can easily be done at home or at work?
Leah: Absolutely. Here are 5 of my go-to exercises you can do anywhere without any equipment needed. I even did these today on my hike! The focus here is to keep your heart rate up for 20 minutes.
